Routine appointments

Appointments with our doctors and specialist nurses are available for booking up to 2 weeks in advance. If you would like to see a particular doctor or nurse then you need to book ahead whenever possible. This is especially important if you have just seen a doctor and been advised to return within 3 to 4 weeks. Please make the follow-up appointment before you leave the surgery.

Same day appointments

These appointments are with the duty doctor and are intended for patients needing to see a doctor that day. Once all the emergency appointments have been booked the duty doctor will normally ring anyone else needing to be seen to ascertain if the patient requires a home visit or to come in at the end of surgery.

Unfortunately we are finding that a number of these appointments are being misused by patients to discuss routine problems. It is vitally important that patients' act responsibly and do not book the appointments for this reason.

Telephone advice

If you feel simply speaking to a Doctor can help you, please leave your name, number and the nature of your enquiry with reception, and you will be contacted as soon as the doctor is able to speak to you. You can also ring 111 for advice. Please note for privacy reasons we can not leave messages on a mobile phone.

Length of appointments

Appointments are ten minutes long and this is adequate for the doctor to discuss one clinical problem only with you. If you have more than one problem you need to discuss you will need to request a longer appointment time in order that the doctor does not run over on their clinic times and make other patients late for their appointments.

If you can't make an appointment

If you are unable to keep your appointment, please phone to cancel AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The Practice now has a policy of writing to people who miss appointments, without notification to the Practice in advance, to highlight the problems this causes and advise them of action that will be taken if other appointments are missed.

Home visits

These are carried out only if the doctor feels it is necessary on medical grounds. The doctors can examine patients and carry out tests much more easily in surgery so please try to attend whenever possible.

If you are too ill to come to the surgery a Doctor will visit you at home if they feel it is appropriate. If you think you may need a home visit please telephone the surgery before 10.30am, giving some indication of the problem. This allows the Doctors to plan the day’s visits with the minimum disruption to surgeries.

Your doctor can usually see several patients at the surgery in the time that it takes to make a single housecall.
